Being a "remote-first" business is killing your early careers program. Here's why:

We're five years out from COVID, and here's the uncomfortable truth…

The graduates starting their careers today were at uni during COVID. They've never experienced proper mentorship or learned through osmosis. They've never had those crucial conversations that actually teach you how business works.

Yet we're still pushing "remote-first" like it's some progressive badge of honour.

I sit next to the youngest people in our office - I literally double their age. I love sharing knowledge and showing them how things really work.

But I can tell you right now: it's bloody difficult to do that through a camera lens.

Learning happens through proximity. Through overhearing conversations. Through watching how experienced people handle pressure.

The businesses winning right now? They're back in the office 3-4 days a week, prioritising graduate development instead of abandoning early careers to spare bedrooms.

Early careers should be the focus of employment sectors globally. Instead, we're leaving them to figure it out alone.

So here's my challenge: If you're serious about developing the next generation, stop hiding behind "remote-first" policies.

Get back in the office. Train young people properly.
